What is Lung teratoma?
A teratoma is a type of cancer that contains one or more of the three layers of cells found in a developing baby (embryo). These cells are called germ cells. A teratoma is one type of germ cell tumor. The mediastinum is located inside the front of the chest in the area that separates the lungs.
What is the complications of a teratoma?
Ovarian teratomas can be associated with various complications and demonstrate a wide spectrum of clinical and imaging features. The complications include torsion (16% of ovarian teratomas), rupture (1%–4%), malignant transformation (1%–2%), infection (1%), and autoimmune hemolytic anemia (<1%).
What can teratomas cause?
Mature: This type of teratoma is usually noncancerous. However, mature teratomas are more likely to grow back once surgically removed. Immature: This type of teratoma is more likely to grow into cancer. Immature teratomas may contain elements of somatic (not germ cell) cancers, such as sarcoma, carcinoma or leukemia.
Are teratomas serious?
Mature teratomas are usually benign (not cancerous). But they may grow back after being surgically removed. Immature teratomas are more likely to develop into a malignant cancer.
What is Trichoptysis?
Trichoptysis (rare plural: trichoptyses) is an extremely rare symptom, whereby patients cough up hair. It is highly specific for rupture of a mediastinal teratoma into the tracheobronchial tree, however it is not pathognomonic as several articles claim (see below) 1,2.
Can a teratoma burst?
Rupture of a cystic teratoma is rare and may be spontaneous or associated with torsion. Most series report a rate of less than 1%, [4, 3] though Ahan et al reported a rate of 2.5% in their report of 501 patients. Rupture may occur suddenly, leading to shock or hemorrhage with acute chemical peritonitis.
How long does it take for a teratoma to grow?
Mature cystic teratomas are usually slow-growing, with an estimated growth rate of 1.8 mm/year, [6] although some have been shown to grow more rapidly.
How can you prevent teratoma?
To prevent the formation of teratomas, small molecules able to selectively and efficiently kill pluripotent cell by inhibiting antiapoptotic factors were developed (2, 3). However, the need for pluripotent stem cells to evade immune responses may be required for the growth of teratomas in vivo.
Can a teratoma cause weight gain?
If ACTH is secreted in excess it can cause an increase in cortisol secretion, which can be associated with the symptoms this patient was experiencing, including acute weight gain and abdominal striae [2].
Can teratoma be cured?
Treating benign germ cell tumors Women with benign (non-cancerous) germ cell tumors such as mature teratomas (dermoid cysts) are cured by removing the part of the ovary that has the tumor (ovarian cystectomy) or by removing the entire ovary.
Should teratoma be removed?
Ovarian teratoma Although malignant degeneration is quite rare, the cyst should be removed in its entirety, and if immature elements are found, the patient should undergo a standard staging procedure.
