DAKTARI Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage is an NGO founded in 2006 located in the South African bush, near Kruger National Park. DAKTARI works to educate and inspire children to value their environment and stimulate community development.

How do I volunteer for Daktari Bush School and wildlife?

Anyone who is 18+ years old with a good level of English and motivated to teach children about the environment and wildlife. No teaching experience required!

How is Daktari founded?

Co-Founders Ian and Michèle met at Tshukudu Lodge many years ago and fell in love. After getting married, they created DAKTARI in 2006. Michèle’s favourite animal is a dassie and Ian’s an elephant.

How does DAKTARI Bush school support the community?

Through the combination of the bush school and the wildlife orphanage, DAKTARI has developed an immersive educational experience for local children to learn about the wildlife around them, the environment, anti-poaching and a wide variety of other issues. Right in the middle of the bush!

We face many challenges in our area, such as poaching, poor education and pollution. South Africa’s large underprivileged population results in overcrowding of schools, where individual classes sometimes exceed 60 children per class.

DAKTARI also runs an outreach program for a greater impact in the communities. The weekly ECO CLUB and Wildlife Crime campaigns give the children the opportunity to ignite positive attitudes towards their valuable environmental heritage.
