How do you play LEGO Dimensions?
Essentially it’s a unique experience within the Lego universe, and the characters you play as within it are actual Lego minifigures that you construct and then beam into the game via the portal. The minifigures have an NFC tag in the base which is recognized by the portal which then activates the character in the game.
Can you play LEGO Dimensions with just the game?
The long answer is yes, technically you can. What you need from the minifigs are the disks inside them, not necessarily the actual LEGOs. The disks with the RFID chip inside are what actually allow you to use them to play the game, not the LEGO figures.
