Can you visit Point Sur lighthouse without a tour?
The lighthouse is open only for guided tours (weekends in winter, extra weekdays in summer). It’s a much nicer thing to do on a sunny day. They don’t take reservations.

As a California State Historic Park, we are dedicated to making sure that you and your friends of all shapes and sizes are having a wonderful trip out to the lighthouse. Your dogs (or adventure cats!) are also welcome inside our museums and gift shops, as long as they are well-behaved and kept on short leashes.
How was Point Sur shoreline formed?
The Point Sur area is dominated by a geological assemblage of rocks known as the Franciscan Formation. The formation consists of a mélange of rocks deposited in a marine environment and subsequently altered by tectonic activity. The geology of the point consists of metavolcanic rocks from this Franciscan assemblage.

Is there a naval base in Point Sur CA?
It is the only remaining complete, stand alone (SOSUS) Naval Facility (from the Cold War) on the West Coast. As part of the Point Sur State Historic Park, restoration is begining and limited access is possible. Docents will share the formerly top-secret mission of the base and how the base worked.
How do I get to Point Sur naval facility?
To attend a tour, meet along the west side of Highway 1 at the locked gate 19 miles south of Rio Road in Carmel. Look for the wood sign with the words “Point Sur Naval Facility” on the west shoulder 1/4 mile south of the Point Sur Lightstation gate. Space is limited — arrive 30 minutes early.

Update (September, 2021): California State Park volunteers are again providing guided tours of Point Sur State Historic Park at both the Lightstation and the adjoining former Naval Facility. Access to the park is only available by attending a tour.
