Who qualifies as a Chelsea Pensioner?
To be eligible for admission as a Chelsea Pensioner a candidate must be a former soldier or non-commissioned officer of the British Army (including National Service) or a former officer of the British Army who served in the ranks for at least 12 years or was awarded a disablement pension while serving in the ranks.

What is so special about the Chelsea Pensioners?
From 1692 until 1955, all Army pensions were administered by and paid from the Royal Hospital Chelsea, which is why all Army pensioners were often referred to as Chelsea Pensioners. Those who lived ‘Out’, in the UK or abroad and received their pension in cash from agents around the country were known as Out-Pensioners.
Do you pay to be a Chelsea Pensioner?
Chelsea Pensioners are free to come and go from the Royal Hospital as they please, and are permitted to wear civilian clothing wherever they travel.
Can you visit Chelsea Pensioners?
Tours are booked through our Tours Manager either by email at [email protected] or by telephone on 0207 881 5237. Bookings can be made 3 months in advance. Bookings open on the first weekday of every month. For example, March 2022 tours will opened for bookings on Wednesday 1st December 2021.
Do Chelsea Pensioners have to pay?
Primarily you have to be a former soldier who is able to live independently and willing to surrender their British Army Pension. This last stipulation is because as soon as Chelsea Pensioners become residents they do not have to pay for accommodation or food.

What is Burton Court and is it open?
Burton Court is private property owned by the Royal Hospital Chelsea, which is used to generate funds for the running costs and maintenance of the Royal Hospital. Burton Court is closed on: Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
How much does the Burton Court access card cost?
The cost of the pass is £845.00 (including VAT) and will last for one year from the date of issue of your access card. The waiting list for membership of Burton Court is currently closed. This will be reviewed in April 2022.
