What is the Likert scale?
The Likert Scale asks how much a person agrees or disagrees with a particular statement or question. It is usually made up of a 5 point rating scale ranging from one end to another with a neutral point in the middle. After you get responses to these types of questions, how then do you analyze the answers?
Is the 2-option scale better than the 7-point Likert scale?
These ultra-simple binary choices may, in some circumstances, provide what’s required. But it has been found (Jones (1968)) that the 2-option scale was seen as less accurate, reliable and interesting than 7-point Likert scales. And more ambiguous too.
When did 5 point Likert scale come into existence?
This form of 5 point Likert scale came into existence in 1932 and is likely to be the most common format. Respondents are offered a middle, neutral response option which enables them to answer even if they are neither satisfied nor dissatisfied or if they neither agree nor disagree with a statement.
What is the optimal number of multiple choice answers on Likert?
Since Likert scales were first introduced, there has been a lot of research into the optimal number of multiple choice answers. Scales from just two choices up to more than 100 have been used in various circumstances.
The scale is named after its inventor, psychologist Rensis Likert. Likert distinguished between a scale proper, which emerges from collective responses to a set of items (usually eight or more), and the format in which responses are scored along a range. Technically speaking, a Likert scale refers only to the former.
Why can’t we use parametric statistics in Likert scales?
(a) the sample size is too small, (b) the data may not be normally distributed, or (c) The data are from Likert scales, which are ordinal, so parametric statistics cannot be used So, I thing we can use parametrical tests
Is DV Likert scale or categorical?
The DV is likert scale, there are 3 IVs that are all likert scale data and control variables that are categorical. I am stuck between analyzing the data using multiple linear regression or ordinal regression. It seems the argument is made both ways.
How do you test for independence in Likert scale?
For ordinal data (individual Likert-scale questions), use non-parametric tests such as Spearman’s correlation or chi-square test for independence. For interval data (overall Likert scale scores), use parametric tests such as Pearson’s r correlation or t-tests.
