The future for Manston Airport is uncertain, more than seven years after it closed, as plans to turn the site into a strategic air freight hub have been put on hold while the government decides whether to withdraw approval.
What is Manston Airport being used for?
Built before both Heathrow and Gatwick, Manston Airport in Kent was once an international gateway to the world serving during both world wars and for many decades after. Now, the former aviation hub is merely used as a lorry park most recently for Coronavirus testing whilst the French shut their border last month.

Since the Ministry of Defence sold RAF Manston in 1998, the airport has never made a profit and has never delivered on its promise of jobs for the area. When the airport closed on 15th May 2014 144 people were employed there. Since 1998 three companies have tried and failed to run Manston as a viable business.
