What does API mean on my boarding pass?
For security reasons, the US, most EU member states, and other countries now require airlines to provide details about their passengers before they travel. This is known as Advance Passenger Information (API). Your airline will let you know what they need from you.

How far in advance is API needed?
All names and Advance Passenger Information (API) must be added at the same time and for all passengers in your group at least 14 days before departure. Once you submit your group API information you’ll receive an email to acknowledge receipt.
Can API be done at the airport?
If the airline offers check-in desks at the airport, you’ll be able to supply API information when you arrive at the airport. You can still log in and make changes if you’ve already provided your API. For security, you’ll need to re-enter the passport number you originally gave us.

API stands for “Application Programming Interface.” An API is a software intermediary that allows two applications to talk to each other. In other words, an API is the messenger that delivers your request to the provider that you’re requesting it from and then delivers the response back to you.

All passengers who travel to the United States, Canada or the United Kingdom need to submit their Advance Passenger Information (API). For many passengers headed to the USA, an ESTA is required. If you are heading to Canada, an eTA may be necessary.
Is APIs required?
APIS data must be collected for all passengers traveling to the U.S., Guam, Puerto Rico, or U.S. Virgin Islands as well as any other country as required by law. For passengers traveling to the U.S. an address for the first night’s stay is also required.
Can I provide API at check in?
If online check-in’s open for your flight, you can also enter your API information during the check-in process. If you’ve opted for a seat upgrade, online check-in opens 14 days before you fly. If not, you can check in from seven days before.

Does API need middle name?
The majority of airlines simply require that the first name and surname shown on your ticket match the first name and surname shown on your passport. Middle names are not normally required. Even the US, which is generally very picky, doesn’t care about middle names on tickets, only in SFPD (their version of API).
