Can transit officers detain you NSW?
Power of search. Transit officers also have the power to stop, detain and search you if they reasonably suspect you have in your possession anything that may affect the safety or security of other members of the public or be used to commit an offence (e.g. weapon, firearm, can of spray paint, etc.).
What hours do transport officers work?
We work shift work with morning and afternoon shifts, with the earliest shift starting at 5am and the latest finishing at 10pm.

Can transport officers ask for ID?
These are officers employed by Transport NSW who patrol trains, stations, ferries and buses. They used to be called transit officers and are often called Revenue Protection Officers. They are NOT police. They are in uniform and have to carry identification which you are allowed to ask to see.

The PTA uses aptitude tests to assist in identifying applicants who are suitable for the role of a Transit Officer. The tests are designed to specifically measure skills relevant to the transport industry and relate to the duties of the role.
When can I apply to become a transit officer?
Our next round of applications will open in November/December 2021. There are a number of important steps that you must meet in order to become a Transit Officer. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, information sessions will not be held at this time.
