The contraceptive vaginal ring is an effective method of contraception. It is a thin, flexible, see-through ring which is just over 5 cm in diameter. It contains two hormones, an oestrogen and a progestogen, just like the combined oral contraceptive (COC) pill and the contraceptive patch.

How is Annovera different from NuvaRing?

Annovera and NuvaRing also differ in their ingredients. While they both contain ethinyl estradiol (a type of estrogen), they have different progestins (forms of progesterone). Annovera contains segesterone acetate, and NuvaRing contains etonogestrel. These two progestins both effectively prevent pregnancy.

If you start using it on any other day of your cycle you should use condoms or abstain from sex for the first 7 days of using the NuvaRing. You can use the vaginal ring contraceptive for 21 days. Then take a break for 7 days. During this time, you will still be protected from pregnancy and will have a period or bleed.

Can I skip my period with Annovera?

Periods on Annovera Annovera is not FDA-approved for continuous use to skip periods, but some doctors may prescribe it this way for “off label” use. If you do use it to skip periods for a year you might need to replace it after 12 cycles instead of 13.

Can you wear a tampon with NuvaRing?

It’s completely fine to use a tampon while you use your NuvaRing. It won’t make the ring less effective. Be aware, though, that you could accidentally take out your NuvaRing when removing a tampon. If the ring comes out, rinse it with lukewarm water and reinsert it right away.
